is a global burden hence to reduce the large burden, treatments to prevent more severe diabetic foot disease and improve quality of life are needed.
Offloading treatments for individuals with diabetic food disease are widely considered among the most effective methods for preventing the progression to more severe diabetic foot disease complications, however they are less affective in enhancing overall quality of life.
Optimal of loading treatments have been consistently found to heal ulcers quicker and prevent infections and amputations more than other treatments. Furthermore, even after a diabetic foot ulcer heals, the foot is considered in remission from the ulcer and the risk of further ulcers is high both at the previous ulcer location and any other overloaded area of the foot.
Offloading techniques have been categorised and sub categorised into
- Offloading devices( ranging from non removable high offloading devices to removeable ankle high of loading devices.
- footwear (from therapeutic footwear to of the shelf footwear)
- surgical procedures ( from metatarsal head resections to digital flexor tenotomies)
- Other treatments like felted foam
Offloading treatment means any intervention undertaken for the purpose of relieving pressure from a specific area of the food.
