Diabetic peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a serious complication in which the high blood glucose causes narrowing of arteries in the legs and feet , increasing the risk of non healing ulcer.
It is 2–7 times more common in diabetics, often presenting with claudication (leg pain while walking), cold skin, and reduced pulses.
Key Aspects of Diabetic PVD:
Symptoms: Many patients are asymptomatic, but others experience pain or cramping in the legs (claudication), slow-healing wounds on feet, cold feet, and, in severe cases, gangrene.
Causes/Risk Factors: Elevated blood sugar damages blood vessels, accelerated by smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Diagnosis: The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a common, non-invasive test to measure blood pressure in the limbs.
Complications: Left untreated, severe cases lead to Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) and amputation.
Management: Treatment involves managing blood sugar, smoking cessation, medication to improve blood flow, and sometimes surgical intervention (e.g., angioplasty or bypass)
